Debate
The Speech and Debate program at Ribét is available to both Middle and High school students. It is an enrichment program that supports student growth in a number of academic areas as well as personal growth. Research, analysis and writing skills are brought from their other classes and utilized in the Debate program. The application of these skills to another discipline reinforces their value and provides an inter-disciplinary experience that will prove useful in university. Experience with competition and teamwork is another important component to the Debate program. Public speaking is the obvious skill one thinks of in regards to debate. Our debaters are willing and able to speak in front of groups of any size. The poise and confidence that these students gain from their participation in Debate will travel with them through university and on to the Board Room.
Students in grades 6 – 8 are eligible to compete in the Jr. High Debate program. Students can compete in up to 5 tournaments per year including National Middle School Speech and Debate National Championships. Ribét students have qualified and competed in 8 consecutive National Championship tournaments. Students have traveled to Colorado, Ohio, Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Texas. Students compete in various debate and speech events. Ribet’s middle school speech and debate program has been ranked amongst the top eight programs in the nation for the past six years consecutively.
Students in grades 9 – 12 are eligible to compete in the High School Debate program. Students can compete in up to 17 tournaments per year. Ribét students have also competed in California State Championships as well as the National Forensic League National Championship. Ribét students have traveled to Oklahoma, North Carolina, UC Berkeley, Texas, Nevada, Arizona, and Hawaii for various Speech and Debate Competitions. Ribét Speech and Debate students have competed in elimination rounds at both the State and National levels.
