Mathematics

Ribét Academy College Preparatory High School Math is a program designed to review knowledge and reinforce skills from earlier years of mathematics classes and to expand on those as far as possible with each individual student. Overall our main focus is preparing our students for college. Our curriculum is established in order to fulfill this and offers those students with interests beyond the requirements the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

Students who did not attend Ribét for eighth grade begin with Algebra I in ninth and proceed with Geometry, Algebra II, and Pre-Calculus. Ribét's eighth graders take Algebra I and so begin ninth with Geometry and proceed to Calculus. These courses give students the opportunity to work with increasingly complex Math language and applications. Students who wish to deepen their knowledge can take AP Calculus AB and in the near future will have AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics available to them.

One of the focuses of our high school Math curriculum is introducing the students to the width, breadth and depth of Math in our lives: Math makes it possible for Music and Art to be created, for Economics and Architecture to be developed and for Science and Medicine to be broadened. As the world becomes ever more global, we recognize that interdisciplinary connectedness is extremely important. We encourage the students to internalize the language of Math and to use it actively as they approach the work of identifying problems and seeking solutions in all subjects. The Science, Technology and English Departments work actively with the Math Department to find ways to use the interwoven aspects of different subjects in combined projects. Independent work, necessary and useful, continues at the high school Math level, and there is an increased focus on group work as well. Collaborative work develops strong interpersonal skills that are vital to working relationships and to foster these is a Ribét Math program goal.
