Second Grade

Language Arts/Reading

 

         Second graders read and understand a good representation of grade-level-appropriate narrative and expository texts. They draw upon a variety of comprehension strategies and critical thinking skills. They distinguish between the structural features of the text and the literary terms or elements (e.g., theme, plot, setting and characters).

 

          Students write in different genres and use the six traits of writing. They work through the various stages of the writing process (e.g., pre-writing, drafting, revising and editing). Children deliver recitations and oral presentations while using proper phrasing, pitch, and modulation.

 

Mathematics

 

         Second graders understand the relationship between numbers, quantities, and place value in whole numbers up to 1,000. They model, represent, and interpret number relationships to create and solve mathematical problems. They estimate, calculate, and solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of two and three digit numbers.

 

          They understand that measurement is accomplished by identifying a unit of measure, repeating that unit and comparing it to the item to be measured. Second grade students identify and describe the attributes of common figures in the plane and of common objects in space. The children collect numerical data and then record, organize, display, and interpret the data on bar graphs and other representations. Students demonstrate an understanding of patterns and how patterns grow. They describe them in general ways.

 

Social Studies

 

          By studying contemporary people who supply goods and services, the students are better able to understand the complex interdependence of our free market system. Second graders demonstrate map skills by describing the absolute and relative locations of people, places, and environments. Students explain governmental institutions and practices in the United States and other countries. Second graders understand the importance of individual action and character and explain how heroes from long ago and in the recent past have made a difference in the lives of others.

 

Science

 

          Students discover that the motion of objects can be observed and measured. They learn that plants and animals have predictable life cycles. Second graders are shown that Earth is made of materials that have distinct properties and provide resources for human activities. The children ask meaningful questions and conduct careful investigations.

 

Adjuncts

 

          Second grade students also receive instruction in Vocal and Instrumental Music, Art, Drama, Physical Education, Foreign Language, and Technology. Field trips supplement in-class instruction.
