Important Info and Frequently Asked Questions
Important Info:
1. Students can take up to 10 units per regular session (Summer, Fall, Spring) and 8 units per Winter session. 60 units is what is required to be able to transfer to a UC via the TAG Program. There is a total of 76 possible units available during the 2 year period.
2. TAG is the "Transfer Admission Guarantee". It has a list of course and deadline requirements that if satisfied guarantees admission to a UC (Excluding UC Berkley, UCLA, and UC San Diego). Here is the link to the TAG page (one the left of the TAG application are the application requirements that the universities that are NOT included with TAG).
3. AP credits are not needed for the Transfer, but AP credits can be used to satisfy class requirements. So if a student passed an AP exam before graduating from Ribet Academy they can use them. IMPORTANT NOTE: the University you are going to transfer after GCC can have a different AP credit policy than GCC so focus on getting the credits you need to transfer while in GCC first. Here is the link to the AP Database showing the AP credits accepted by GCC and the possible Universities you will transfer to.
4. GCC has classes that can be taken on campus at GCC and remote/zoom classes. The remote classes are the ones that can be done on campus at Ribet Academy. These remote classes are the main ones for High School students. A lot of them start after 12 noon, but some start earlier in the day. Remote classes dominate a lot of the classes selection at GCC students. So classes that are normally required to graduate at GCC or for a transfer are available remotely. They give the same amount of units and have no difference on a transcript.
4. The classes are free. However you need to state that on your paperwork, you are a Dual Enrollment student with Ribet Academy. This waives the class fees.
5. You should not be looking at this to just get a GCC degree. You should be working hard to get "A"s in all of your classes, because that gives you a lot of agency and options when transferring to a high ranking UC. If you pass GCC with all "C"s do not expect UCLA, Berkley, or USC to accept your transfer.
6. There is a form called GCC IGETC that has all of the required classes to transfer, not including the classes based on the major. All students should use this form when looking for what classes to take and see if they are on tract to satisfy their requirements to transfer.
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Can this all be done before a student graduates 12th grade at Ribet Academy?
Yes, there is a total of 76 units a student can take before graduation and only 60 units is needed. Also many of our students pass a minimum of 5 AP exams before graduation. Those AP units can be used to satisfy the requirements as well, giving them enough units to graduate GCC.
2. Are the GCC classes hard?
Our students have stated that they are harder than regular high school classes, but a little less difficult then Honors classes. AP classes were viewed as more difficult and had more homework and assignments. GCC classes were also shorter sessions. However this is viewed as double edged sword as the GCC classes having less assignments means each assignment is worth more points so missing one does hurt your grade more.
3. Has there been any issues getting classes after the Highschool schedule ends?
No, as GCC uses a block schedule so many students take 2-3 classes which are not everyday of the week. Many of them fit the classes between 1pm-3:30pm, but some students picked the 6pm classes. They have all gotten the classes as long as they were after 12 noon. Morning classes at GCC did not work for a half GCC half Ribet Academy schedule.
4. For the Universities that are NOT a part of the TAG program, has there been any trouble transferring after graduating?
No, but the students already knew the major and classes that were required to transfer. They planned it out. They also had mostly "A"s in the GCC classes. Here is the link of the requirement to the UC 's not a part of TAG and for USC (which is one of the most popular applications for Ribet Students).
5. Is this the same a Dual Credit system since it is called Dual Enrollment?
No, this is not. The GCC classes are on a transcript for College and Ribet classes are a transcript for High School. This means Universities will be looking at the GCC transcript more for the transfer since they will be going in as Junior to Universities and not a Freshmen even though they are 18 years old at the time. The High school transcript is still important to show that they did in fact graduate on time while taking college classes.
